Sigil
The only city visible in the void, and the door to every plane that exists.
Sigil is the City of Doors, the capital and sole settlement of the Outside — a plane of existence that lies beyond all other planes in the Planescape cosmology. Built upon a vast disc that floats in an endless void, Sigil serves as the universal gateway: its gates open onto every other plane of existence, making it the one place from which any realm can be reached. The city is an eclectic sprawl of districts, guild-halls, temples, and warrens, all governed under the absolute and unquestioned authority of the Lady of Pain.

Lore & Background
Sigil exists on the Outside, a plane that is not a plane in any conventional sense — it is the space outside all planes, a featureless void in which nothing else exists. The city floats upon a great disc of stone and metal, and from the infinite blackness surrounding it, Sigil is the only thing that can be seen. Its gates, hundreds of them lining the city's perimeter and interior, open onto the Material Plane, the Inner Planes, the Outer Planes, and every other realm. To travel between planes, one must pass through Sigil. There is no other way.
In Their Own Story
The rain in Sigil does not fall so much as drift, suspended in the thin, colorless air of the Outside. You stand at the edge of the Bazaar, watching a merchant hawk potions beside a woman selling a single, unidentifiable key. The disc stretches in every direction, its rim dissolving into the black nothing beyond. Somewhere at the center, behind a wall of silence, the Lady of Pain sits in her throne room, blind, patient, waiting for someone to walk in with too much on their person. You check your pockets. You check your mind. You walk.
Reader's Guide
Sigil is laid out as a large circular city built upon a flat disc that floats in the void of the Outside. The districts radiate outward from the center, where the Lady of Pain's palace dominates the skyline. Surrounding districts include the Bazaar (a sprawling open-air market), the Warrens (crowded, lower-class warrens), the Temple Ward (home to shrines and temples of various deities), the Red Guild (the thieves' guild and its associated warren), and several other named wards, each with its own character and governance.
The Lady of Pain is the sole ruler. She is blind, and her authority is absolute. Her one law — that no one may enter her palace bearing any item, spell, or ability — is enforced without exception. Beyond that single rule, she does not intervene in the city's affairs. Governance is delegated to a council of wardens, one per district, and to the various guilds and factions that operate within Sigil's borders.
The environment reflects the Outside's metaphysical nature: the city is a nexus, a crossroads. Its architecture is deliberately eclectic, mixing styles from every plane. The gates — both at the city's perimeter and scattered within — are the physical manifestation of Sigil's role as the universal gateway. The void surrounding the disc is not empty space; it is the absence of all planes, and Sigil is the only thing that exists within it. The city's freedom, chaos, and lack of a single ruling philosophy mirror the fact that it belongs to no one plane and therefore to all of them.
Did You Know?
- The Lady of Pain's palace is the one location in all of Sigil where you cannot bring any item, spell, or supernatural ability — she strips you of everything upon entry.
- Sigil is the only visible object in the entire Outside; the rest of that plane is an infinite, featureless void.
- The city's gates open onto every other plane of existence, making Sigil the sole transit point between planes.
- The Lady of Pain is blind, yet her authority over the city is absolute and unquestioned by any faction or deity.
